ºÚÁÏÍø Students Embark on Social Justice Pilgrimage to Italy During Jubilee Year

Fourteen ºÚÁÏÍø students are immersed in a unique travel study experience in Italy from January 1-11 as part of a Social Justice Pilgrimage offered through University Ministry. The trip coincides with the extraordinary , a significant event in the Catholic Church.

Led by Venus Wozniak of University Ministry, Dr. Steve Nawara, professor and chair of Political Science, and Dr. Dennis H. Cremin, professor and chair of History, the group is exploring Rome and Assisi, delving into themes of social justice within a historical and spiritual context.

The Jubilee Year, which began with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica by Pope Francis on December 24, 2024, and continues until the Epiphany of the Lord on January 6, 2026, is expected to draw an estimated 35 million pilgrims to Rome. The ºÚÁÏÍø group has the unique opportunity to participate in this Jubilee celebration.

The itinerary includes visits to significant religious and historical sites, such as the Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel and major pilgrimage churches like St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Paul’s Outside the Walls. The group plans to enter through the Holy Doors, a symbolic act of pilgrimage during the Jubilee.

Students participating in the program are enrolled in one of two courses: an interdisciplinary seminar, “Christians as the Romans Saw Them,” co-taught by Cremin and Wozniak, or “Politics and Civic Engagement” taught by Nawara.

Participating students include Sedona Barrett, Eduardo Castaneda, Ariana Garcia, Kody Hammond, Khiya Jones, Jason Palka, Ethan Petrielli, Sofia Ramos, Ramiro Regalado and Ezra Samson.

This trip marks a pilot program for January term travel study opportunities at ºÚÁÏÍø.
